Ten Caddies were driven into one of Stanley Marsh 3's fields, then half-buried, nose-down, in the dirt (supposedly at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza). He wanted a piece of public art that would baffle the locals, and the hippies came up with a tribute to the evolution of the Cadillac tail fin. They called themselves The Ant Farm, and their silent partner was Amarillo billionaire Stanley Marsh 3. Standing along Route 66 west of Amarillo, Texas, Cadillac Ranch was invented and built by a group of art-hippies imported from San Francisco. Professional authors and screenwriters know a pre-baked, easy-to-get symbol when they see it. “He was the best speaker of the day,” Carney acknowledged.Cadillac Ranch is one of them. Yocum also made a big impression during the media day presentations that included the Governor of Delaware, John Carney, administrators from Wilmington Country Club, and golf course architect Andrew Green. “Without the Evans Scholarship, I truly do not know where my siblings and I would be today.” “It meant that my siblings could now commit to four-year universities, and that paying for college was not going to be such a burden on my family and on me. “When I finally opened it, with the biggest smile on my face, I Iet everyone know the truly life-changing news,” he recalled. Surrounded by family and friends, Yocum admitted that he nervously fumbled the package. “I worked incredibly hard on the application, with so much guidance and support from many members of the club,” Yocum said.Ī decision letter arrived to his home in Glen Mills in February of 2021. Yocum made such a positive impression, that by his senior year of high school, multiple Wilmington Country Club members recommended that he apply to the Evans Scholar program. “But the more loops I took, the more my confidence and caddying skills grew.” “I thought that many people would question if I could even carry a bag,” he laughed. When he started caddying six years ago, Yocum was about 5-foot tall and weighed about 110 pounds. Very quickly I learned the dedication required to achieving my goals.” “Caddying has taught me the art and importance of persistence, relationship building and respect. “I’ve learned countless lessons on the golf course,” he said. Yocum is preparing for his sophomore year at Penn State, and is pursuing a degree in accounting. “All these students have significant financial need, and many come from families that have never had a parent go to college,” Colnitas said. And in 2021, a record 1,070 young men and women went off to 21 leading universities – including Yocum. In the last 15 years, the BMW has raised more than $40 million, and has sent more than 3,000 caddies to college. “The BMW Championship is always a thrilling week, but its lasting impact is really the one it makes on youth caddies,” said Steve Colnitas, Vice Chairman of the Western Golf Association. The non-profit is operated by the Western Golf Association and has been awarding full tuition and housing scholarships to caddies since 1930. One of the first at the club to receive a prestigious Evans Scholarship, Yocum’s presence makes sense because the Evans Scholars Foundation has been the main beneficiary of the BMW since its debut in 2007. “(This) is an exceptional place, and I am so excited for the world to see this in a couple months,” Yocum said.
